"Time Stands Still at English College, Bequest or No"

The cost of tradition at Oxford. (Or is it really a rebellious stand?)

All Souls College, a 568-year-old division of the University of Oxford, said today that it would not move a sundial on its campus, even if the price of leaving it undisturbed was a share of an £888,000 estate left by one of its fellows. The scholar, a Slavonic expert named John Simmons, had argued for years before he died that it had been a huge mistake in 1870 to relocate the sundial, which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1658 (The Chronicle, June 12).
