Academic FAQs

Many of you have asked very pertinent questions regarding transfer of grades, etc. Here are the FAQs regarding academic issues. If you still have questions, please use the "comment" function of this blog and we can hold a conversation here since if you have thought of the question others most likely need the answer too!

What about the undergraduate residency requirements?

Coursework completed at accredited institutions during this fall term can be used to satisfy the residency requirements.

How can I get a copy of Tulane's catalogue/schedule of classes?

The online catalogue is available on the web site.
We will provide the online course schedule for spring 2006 as soon as possible.

How do I get my credits from courses taken elsewhere applied to my Tulane academic record?

You should request an official transcript from your host institution.

How do my grades transfer?

Tulane University will accept credit for all courses with a passing grade from regionally accredited universities provided the student paid Tulane tuition in the fall semester; such credit will be applied to a student's Tulane course of study. We encourage all Tulane students to enroll in courses that they might have enrolled in at Tulane, but equivalent or near equivalent courses will also count to degree progress.

Students enrolled in schools and colleges with accredited professional programs (for example: Business School, School of Social Work, Engineering School, and School of Architecture) should enroll in universities with programs that are also accredited.

I enrolled at an institution that follows the quarter system. How are these credits treated?

There is an established formula for converting quarter hours to semester hours. Quarter hours are equal to two-thirds of a semester hour; therefore 12 quarter hours would be transferred as 8 semester hours.

A small number of institutions like Louisiana Tech at Ruston operate on a quarter calendar but award semester hours based on longer than usual class meeting times. If you are attending an institution such as Louisiana Tech, your hours will transfer to Tulane on a one for one basis.

The semester credits will then be posted to your Tulane transcript.

Can I graduate in December?

If you complete all of your degree requirements during the fall, you will be able to graduate with a Tulane degree. More details on graduation will follow.

Will online courses count?

Since there is considerable variation in the types of online courses, these courses will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Contact a college/school advisor via the call center as soon as possible to discuss your proposed online course.

Is there a difference between the classifications that host institutions use for students, such as visitor, guest, temporary, non-matriculating, etc.?

Tulane students attending colleges and universities may be classified in a variety of ways. Regardless of how you are classified you are considered a Tulane student by your host institution.

The terminology used is not particularly important. What is relevant is that Tulane students attending these classes are expected to return to Tulane for the spring semester and have their courses posted to their transcripts.

If I withdraw from Tulane, how do I reapply?

First time freshman should reapply through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for the spring semester. All other undergraduates that have spent one semester at Tulane should apply through their respective Dean’s Office.


  • So, just to be sure, are credits taken at other schools still being recorded as pass/fail by Tulane?

    Also, do we have to notify Tulane that we will be coming again in the spring, or do we only notify them if we aren't?

  • Yes, credits you are currently taking will be registered at Tulane as pass/fail BUT they WILL count towards your degree.

    You will need to register for the spring semester shortly, so yes you will need to notify Tulane that you are returning. See the University posting here regarding registration.

  • Can the "real" grades registered at Tulane as pass/fail be included in a student's transcript? If, for example, a student is applying to graduate school, the "real" grades might increase the chance of admission.

  • When you apply for graduate school you will submit your transcript from Tulane AND that of any other college where you did course work.

    In short: your "real" grades will show up on any graduate school application!
